Altman Cites Sustainable Foundation as LeBron James Joins 76ers

Cavaliers president Koby Altman stated the team is built for a sustainable run despite LeBron James signing with the Philadelphia 76ers.

Cleveland Cavaliers president of basketball operations Koby Altman addressed the media on Friday following LeBron James' decision to sign with the Philadelphia 76ers. James, who spent the last eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, chose Philadelphia over finalists Miami and Golden State, according to agent Rich Paul. Despite the move, Altman emphasized that the Cavaliers possess a strong infrastructure and coaching staff designed for long-term success regardless of James' choice.

Cleveland enters the upcoming training camp following an Eastern Conference finals appearance where they were swept in four games by the New York Knicks. The organization secured its core this offseason by signing Donovan Mitchell to a four-year, $273 million extension and James Harden to a three-year, $97 million deal. Harden, 37, arrived three weeks early for workouts to assist head coach Kenny Atkinson with team preparations.

To address the wing position, the Cavaliers acquired 24-year-old Peyton Watson in a five-team trade and signed him to a four-year, $88 million contract. Watson joins a young core featuring Evan Mobley (25) and Jarrett Allen (28) after averaging career highs of 14.6 points and 4.9 rebounds with the Denver Nuggets last season. Coach Atkinson noted that Watson shot 41% from 3-point range last year while starting 40 games.

Altman noted that the team achieved financial flexibility by staying below both salary cap aprons during these transactions. Cleveland has recorded at least 50 wins in each of the past two seasons and remains focused on internal growth as other Eastern Conference contenders, including Indiana and Miami, also made roster adjustments.
