Mirra Andreeva reached the China Open semifinals on Thursday by defeating Ekaterina Alexandrova 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3).
Fourth-seeded Mirra Andreeva advanced to the China Open semifinals on Thursday with a 7-6 (4), 7-6 (3) victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova. The French Open champion overcame a second-set deficit where Alexandrova rallied from 4-1 down and later 5-3 down while Andreeva was serving for the match. This result marks Andreeva’s first career win against Alexandrova following two previous losses to her compatriot. The 17-year-old is currently pursuing her fourth singles title of the year.
Nikola Bartunkova secured her spot in the next round by defeating Karolina Muchova 6-3, 6-0. The 20-year-old Czech player opened the match by winning the first five games and concluded the contest by winning the final seven games consecutively. This victory over the seventh-seeded Muchova represents Bartunkova's first appearance in a WTA 1000 semifinal and her third career win against an opponent ranked in the top 10.
Andreeva and Bartunkova will face each other in the semifinals. Bartunkova attributed her recent form to preparation involving practice sessions with top-ranked players including Iga Swiatek and Coco Gauff during the week preceding the tournament in Beijing.
