Nikola Bartunkova advanced to the China Open quarterfinals on Tuesday by defeating Sinja Kraus 6-0, 4-6, 6-3. The 34th-ranked Czech player follows up a straight-sets third-round upset of world No. 2 Aryna Sabalenka. Bartunkova will now face compatriot Karolina Muchova in their first career meeting.
Seventh-seeded Muchova reached the quarterfinals by eliminating 12-seed Naomi Osaka 7-5, 1-6, 7-6 (7) in a match lasting just under three hours. Despite Osaka recording 11 aces, she converted only 5 of 10 break point opportunities. Muchova secured the win on a final volley during the third-set tiebreak to overcome the former world No. 1.
In other action, 19th-seeded Ekaterina Alexandrova upset fifth seed and Wimbledon champion Linda Noskova 6-2, 6-2 in 60-plus minutes. Alexandrova won 88% of her first-serve points, totaling 21 of 24, and broke Noskova’s serve four times. Noskova failed to convert any of her four break point chances and committed six double faults during the loss.
Alexandrova, currently ranked 25th, moves on to play fourth-seeded Mirra Andreeva. Andreeva, the reigning French Open champion, trails the head-to-head series against Alexandrova 0-2 and has yet to win a set in their previous encounters. According to ESPN News Services and the Associated Press, these results finalize several spots in the Beijing quarterfinal bracket.
