Nikola Bartunkova defeated four-time Grand Slam champion Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-3 in the third round of the China Open on Sunday.
Associated Press reports that world No. 34 Nikola Bartunkova defeated second-ranked Aryna Sabalenka 6-4, 6-3 in the third round of the China Open on Sunday. The match lasted just over an hour and a half in Beijing, where Sabalenka squandered five break points during the opening set. The loss ensures the 28-year-old Belorussian, a four-time Grand Slam winner, maintains her record of never progressing past the quarterfinals at this WTA-1000 event.
Bartunkova's victory follows the Saturday exit of world No. 1 Elena Rybakina, leaving the tournament without its top two seeds. The Czech player now advances to face 24-year-old Sinja Kraus of Austria. Kraus reached the next round by defeating Dayana Yastremska with a score of 6-1, 6-4.
In other women's bracket action, fifth-ranked Mirra Andreeva secured a 6-4, 6-1 win over Polina Kudermetova. The reigning French Open champion converted five of seven break point opportunities and recorded six aces during the 68-minute match against her Uzbek opponent. On the men's side, top seed Alexander Zverev is scheduled for a quarterfinal match against Novak Djokovic later Sunday.
