Anthony Edwards underwent a successful arthroscopic debridement on his right knee Thursday and is expected to be sidelined for up to two months.

Minnesota Timberwolves star Anthony Edwards underwent a successful arthroscopic debridement procedure on his right knee at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, on Thursday. The 25-year-old is expected to make a full recovery, though the team did not provide a specific timeline for his return. Sources told ESPN’s Shams Charania that the guard could be sidelined for up to two months.

The procedure was performed to address cartilage damage, bone spurs, or loose joint fragments that had caused Edwards pain since last spring. While previous scans during the playoffs and before training camp did not indicate a need for surgery, an MRI conducted this Tuesday revealed new damage. Edwards was limited to a career-low 61 games last season due to ongoing issues with the joint.

Despite the injury, Edwards set a franchise record by scoring 133 points through the first four games of the current season. This stretch included a 47-point performance in an overtime loss at Cleveland on Monday, one day after he was seen grimacing and grabbing his knee during a home opener against the Toronto Raptors. Timberwolves president of basketball operations Tim Connelly stated the team prioritized Edwards' long-term health, noting that the player's condition over the summer did not warrant a surgical recommendation at that time.

Minnesota must now navigate a rotation without their leading scorer following a Wednesday night loss to the Golden State Warriors. Coach Chris Finch indicated the team will look to fill the scoring void by committee, distributing shots across the roster to compensate for the loss of Edwards, who Connelly expects to be "good as new" upon his eventual return to game action.
