Brighton Stuns Manchester United with 3-2 Comeback at Old Trafford

Manchester United collapsed at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, losing 3-2 in the Carabao Cup despite holding a two-goal lead.

Brighton & Hove Albion eliminated Manchester United from the Carabao Cup third round on Wednesday, winning 3-2 at Old Trafford after trailing by two goals. Shea Lacey and Mason Mount provided United with a 2-0 lead within the opening 10 minutes, but Charalampos Kostoulas scored for the visitors just before halftime to narrow the margin. Pascal Gross equalized in the second half before substitute Maxim De Cuyper secured the winning goal three minutes later.

The result marks the first time in 50 years that Manchester United lost at home after leading by two goals. It also represents their first defeat at Old Trafford when leading at halftime since May 1984. Fabian Hürzeler’s side has now won five of their last six matches at the stadium. Following the final whistle, United players were met with boos from the home crowd as they attempted to applaud the fans.

Manager Michael Carrick, who took over from Ruben Amorim in January, has now overseen a run of two wins from six games this season. The club has not won a domestic cup tie since defeating Leicester City in February 2025, suffering four consecutive domestic cup exits under three different managers. United currently sits with four points from four matches in the Premier League and faces Fulham this Sunday. Brighton will next host Arsenal at the Amex on Saturday to mark their 125th anniversary.
