Defensive tackle Daron Payne is out for the remainder of the year after suffering a Jones fracture during a Friday practice session.
Washington Commanders defensive tackle Daron Payne suffered a season-ending Jones fracture during a team drill in practice on Friday, according to a source told by ESPN's Adam Schefter. The injury occurred late in a light session and was described by a team source as a fluke incident that did not involve another player stepping on his foot. Medical experts estimate a typical recovery for this type of fracture can take up to four months.
Payne, the longest-tenured position player on the roster, will be placed on injured reserve. The 2022 Pro Bowler had started all six games this season, recording one sack and averaging 2.8 pass rush wins per game. This development comes as the 29-year-old enters the final year of his contract; he previously signed a four-year extension in March 2023 after being selected in the first round of the 2018 draft.
Washington (1-4-1) faces the Philadelphia Eagles (2-5) on Sunday night without both Payne and starting end Javon Kinlaw, who is sidelined by a knee injury. To address the depth on the defensive line, the team expects to rely on veterans Charles Omenihu and Deatrich Wise Jr. Additionally, second-round pick Jer'Zhan Newton is listed as questionable for Sunday after returning to practice following a torn pectoral muscle sustained on August 14.
