SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Wide receiver Deebo Samuel officially signed a one-year contract worth up to $7 million with the San Francisco 49ers on Friday, August 1, 2026. During his first practice session on Saturday, Samuel participated in individual drills and logged approximately 10 reps during team periods. He recorded three receptions during the session, highlighted by a significant gain on a pass over the middle from quarterback Brock Purdy. This return follows a single season with the Washington Commanders, where Samuel appeared in 16 games and produced 72 catches for 727 yards and five touchdowns, alongside 75 rushing yards and one score on the ground.

General manager John Lynch initiated the reunion process approximately one month ago. The front office moved to secure Samuel prior to the news that rookie receiver Ricky Pearsall required season-ending surgery on the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) in his right knee. Samuel’s return to the organization that drafted him in 2019 comes after he requested a trade last offseason, which resulted in San Francisco sending him to Washington in exchange for a fifth-round draft selection. Upon his arrival in the locker room, Samuel reclaimed his former No. 19 jersey. He confirmed a "little transaction" took place with wide receiver Jacob Cowing to facilitate the jersey swap. The veteran playmaker had previously hit free agency for the first time this past offseason, documenting his workouts and personal life on YouTube while waiting for a contract offer. During the negotiation period, teammates including tight end George Kittle and fullback Kyle Juszczyk publicly recruited him via social media, offering guest rooms to encourage his return to the Bay Area.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw described Samuel as the "juice of the offense," citing his ability to provide a spark for the unit. The 49ers' current offensive depth chart includes veteran receiver Mike Evans, tight end George Kittle, and running back Christian McCaffrey. Lynch noted that the NFL's new dynamic kickoff rules have revitalized the importance of the return game, and Samuel has committed to handling these duties. While his specific offensive volume remains to be determined, the coaching staff plans to utilize his versatility in creative capacities.

Samuel described the transition back to Santa Clara as seamless, noting that the coaching staff and organizational personnel have remained largely unchanged since his departure. He spent 24 hours back with the team before Saturday's practice, remarking that the environment felt identical to his previous tenure. The wideout expressed that while the free agency process was a long and frustrating period, he maintained his focus through a support system of childhood friends and associates until the San Francisco opportunity materialized.
