Fleetwood Town defeated Arsenal 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 draw to become the first fourth-tier side to eliminate a reigning Premier League champion from the League Cup.

Fleetwood Town secured a 5-3 penalty shootout victory over Arsenal on Tuesday to advance to the Carabao Cup quarterfinals after the match ended 1-1 in regulation. Nineteen-year-old Northern Ireland Under-21 defender Conor Haughey converted the decisive spot kick into the top left corner at Highbury. The result marks the first time in history a fourth-tier club has eliminated the reigning Premier League champions from this competition.

Fleetwood took an initial lead in the 21st minute through a goal from Fulham loanee Aaron Loupalo-Bi. Arsenal equalized in the second half via Viktor Gyökeres following the halftime introduction of Martin Ødegaard. The visitors were reduced to 10 men in the 85th minute when Max Dowman received a red card for a petulant kick. In the subsequent shootout, Fleetwood goalkeeper Jay Lynch denied Bruno Guimarães to set the stage for Haughey’s winner.

Manager Matt Lawlor’s side, currently 18th in League Two, joins third-tier Bradford City in the quarterfinal draw. Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta noted that despite his team's superior volume of shots and chances, they failed to capitalize on their dominance. Fleetwood’s victory comes against an Arsenal side that were beaten finalists in the tournament last season.
