Islam Makhachev Secures Five-Round Unanimous Decision Victory at UFC 330

Islam Makhachev defended his welterweight crown at UFC 330 with a five-round unanimous decision win against Ian Machado Garry.

Islam Makhachev solidified his status as the pound-for-pound king on Saturday, securing a five-round unanimous decision victory over Ian Machado Garry. The bout served as the main event for UFC 330, where the welterweight champion cruised through all five frames to retain his title. While Makhachev dominated the headliner, the co-main event saw Mackenzie Dern dismantle Gillian Robertson to earn the most significant win of her career. Robertson, who had competed in 20 UFC bouts prior to this first title opportunity, lost the final frame of the five-round contest but was otherwise controlled by the strawweight champion.

Welterweight Title Contenders Emerge

Following the UFC 330 main event, Carlos Prates and Michael Morales have surfaced as the primary candidates for the next welterweight title shot. Morales currently holds a perfect 19-0 professional record and is riding a streak of three consecutive first-round finishes. Despite these statistics, Prates is considered a stronger option due to a superior strength of record in the UFC, even with a prior loss to Ian Machado Garry on his resume. Morales served as the official backup fighter for the UFC 330 main event, successfully weighing in for the role.

If the UFC selects Prates for the next championship bout, matchmaking for Machado Garry could involve a pairing with Michael Morales. An alternative for the recently defeated title challenger is Gabriel Bonfim, who recently secured a victory over former champion Belal Muhammad. Bonfim is scheduled to face Sean Brady in the main event of UFC Fight Night on Nov. 7. Another potential peer for Machado Garry is Jack Della Maddalena, though Bonfim is noted for his potential to reach knockout artist status if he bypasses Brady.

Strawweight Division Scenarios

Mackenzie Dern’s future as strawweight champion remains tied to the status of Zhang Weili. Zhang previously failed in an attempt to capture the flyweight gold last year, and it is currently unknown if she will return to the 115-pound division. If Zhang does not return to reclaim the title she previously held, Tatiana Suarez is positioned as the top alternative for Dern. This potential matchup would feature world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu against world-class wrestling, a pairing that has been delayed previously due to Suarez’s health and timing issues.

Gillian Robertson, now looking to rebound from her loss to Dern, has several fresh options in the top 10. Mizuki, the current No. 10-ranked strawweight, is a suggested opponent due to her grappling skills. Another possibility is Virna Jandiroba; both Robertson and Jandiroba are the two most recent title challengers to lose against Dern. A victory for either would be necessary to re-enter the immediate title picture.

Lightweight Rankings and Future Bouts

In the lightweight division, Jalin Turner is seeking to build on his current momentum of back-to-back first-round finishes. This recent success follows a difficult 1-4 stretch against ranked competition that led to a brief retirement in 2025. A potential opponent for Turner is Rafael Fiziev, as both fighters are looking to stabilize their positions within the lightweight top 15.

Farés Ziam is also a factor in the lightweight rankings despite a recent upset decision loss to Tom Nolan. Ziam is scheduled to compete against Axel Sola next month in Paris. If Ziam is successful in his home country, a matchup against Turner would pit two highly-touted strikers against one another. The UFC continues to evaluate these scenarios as the fallout from UFC 330 reshapes the championship landscape across three weight classes.
