J.J. McCarthy Exits 13-3 Loss to Ravens After 18 Snaps and 81 Passing Yards

Quarterback J.J. McCarthy finished with 81 passing yards on 18 snaps before a first-quarter injury cut his night short in the Vikings' 13-3 loss to Baltimore.

The Minnesota Vikings fell 13-3 to the Baltimore Ravens in a preseason matchup that saw quarterback J.J. McCarthy exit early after being "banged up" during the opening frame. McCarthy, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft, completed 5 of 10 passing attempts for 81 yards before his night ended. The rookie signal-caller played 18 total snaps across four offensive series in the first quarter, though head coach Kevin O'Connell admitted he intended to keep the quarterback in for at least one additional possession.

McCarthy’s performance was highlighted by a 50-yard completion to receiver Tai Felton, which moved the Vikings to the Ravens' 10-yard line. However, the drive stalled as McCarthy overthrew Felton in the end zone on second down and failed to connect with Myles Price on fourth down. Earlier in the game, McCarthy’s first pass attempt sailed over the head of Price, who had found an opening along the sideline. The Vikings failed to score on the drive following the 50-yard gain, contributing to the 10-point margin of defeat.

Physical Toll and Injury Context

During his limited action, McCarthy absorbed three hits and one sack from the Baltimore defense. On his final play of the game, four Ravens defenders converged on him in the pocket, leaving the quarterback to rise slowly from the turf. O'Connell noted that McCarthy appeared "a little hobbled" following the sequence, leading to the decision to sideline him. Despite the physical toll, McCarthy stated after the game that he does not imagine being sidelined for upcoming practices, describing the situation as being "just a little banged up."

This latest physical setback follows a significant history of medical issues for the Vikings passer. McCarthy missed the entirety of his rookie season due to a torn meniscus in his right knee. During the subsequent season, he was absent for seven games because of a concussion and a high right ankle sprain. Additionally, he has previously dealt with a hairline fracture in his right hand.

Quarterback Competition and Accuracy Struggles

McCarthy addressed his missed throws in the red zone, noting that he did not feel "sped up" despite the pressure. He characterized the missed opportunities as part of the preseason learning process, emphasizing the importance of logging data from those mistakes to ensure he hits those targets in future games. The Vikings' offensive staff called plays that McCarthy felt were effective, but the quarterback took responsibility for the lack of execution on the scoring chances.

Head coach Kevin O'Connell recently clarified the hierarchy of the Minnesota quarterback room, slotting McCarthy as the No. 2 option. He currently sits behind starter Kyler Murray but remains ahead of veterans Carson Wentz and Max Brosmer on the depth chart. O'Connell has maintained that the position remains competitive, placing high stakes on the final week of training camp.

Looking Ahead to Denver

The Vikings are scheduled to travel for a preseason game against the Denver Broncos this coming Friday. This upcoming contest serves as the final evaluation period following the loss to Baltimore. O'Connell indicated that while he did not have a specific injury update immediately following the Ravens game, McCarthy seemed to be fine. The team will monitor his status throughout the week to determine his availability for the trip to Denver as they finalize their roster and depth chart positions.
