Jets Rule Out Mason Taylor and Minkah Fitzpatrick for Sunday vs. Lions

Tight end Mason Taylor is ruled out for Sunday's game against Detroit with a thumb injury, while safety Minkah Fitzpatrick will miss his second straight contest.

The New York Jets (1-1) will play the Detroit Lions on Sunday without starting tight end Mason Taylor, who was ruled out Friday due to a thumb injury sustained during last week's game against the Green Bay Packers. Taylor did not participate in practice throughout the week and is currently designated as week-to-week. Although Taylor has recorded just two receptions for minus-2 yards this season, he has played more snaps than any other tight end on the roster. In his absence, first-round selection Kenyon Sadiq is expected to see increased playing time after recording five catches for 38 yards and one rushing touchdown through two games.

Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick is also sidelined for the second consecutive week with a groin injury. The Jets' secondary, which limited Jordan Love to 145 passing yards last week, now faces a Lions offense led by Jared Goff. New York enters the contest seeking its first interception in an NFL-record 19 games. Defensively, edge rusher Joseph Ossai (foot) and rookie cornerback D'Angelo Ponds (calf) are expected to be available for their team debuts after practicing fully on Friday.

The Jets' receiving corps faces further depth issues as Adonai Mitchell was limited in Friday's practice with a finger injury. Coach Aaron Glenn noted that Mitchell caught his finger in a jersey on Thursday but does not believe it is broken. With three wideouts already on injured reserve, the team plans to promote either Sterling Shepard or Tyler Johnson from the practice squad to bolster a group currently led by Garrett Wilson and Isaiah Williams. Malik McClain was also signed from the practice squad this week to contribute on special teams.
