Joe Espada to Finish Season as Manager After Astros Part With GM Dana Brown

Owner Jim Crane confirmed Joe Espada remains manager for the rest of the season following the mutual departure of GM Dana Brown.

NEW YORK -- Houston Astros owner Jim Crane announced Tuesday that manager Joe Espada will remain in his position for the duration of the season. This confirmation arrived one day after the club parted ways with general manager Dana Brown, whose contract was scheduled to expire at the conclusion of the year. The Astros entered Tuesday’s three-game series against the New York Yankees with a 65-66 record, having lost nine of their previous 14 contests, including four defeats against the Angels and A’s. Despite this recent stretch, Houston previously recovered from a 20-31 start to win 40 of 66 games, a run highlighted by a 6-3 victory over San Diego on August 7.

Espada, who was promoted from bench coach following Dusty Baker's retirement after the 2023 season, holds a career managerial record of 240-214. Under his leadership in 2024, the team overcame a 12-24 start to secure their seventh American League West title in eight years. Crane noted that the team's recent performance on the field did not dictate the timing of the front office change, stating the focus remains on winning the division and the American League. The owner met with Espada for nearly 10 minutes before addressing the media outside the clubhouse to clarify the leadership structure for the final stretch of the schedule.

Front Office Transition and Interim Leadership

The departure of Dana Brown was described by the organization as a mutual decision. Brown originally joined the franchise in January 2023, taking over for James Click, who was dismissed six days after Houston secured its second World Series championship. During his tenure, Brown oversaw a roster that reached a seventh consecutive ALCS, eventually falling in seven games to the Texas Rangers. In the interim, senior adviser Jeff Bagwell will join assistant general managers Charles Cook, Gavin Dickey, and Connor Huff to fulfill general manager duties. Crane will personally oversee baseball operations during this transition period.

Crane expressed respect for Brown’s tenure, citing him as a great talent who has been in the industry for a long time. The owner suggested the timing of the move provides Brown space to regroup and seek new employment. Espada described the conversation regarding Brown's exit as emotional, noting their three-and-a-half-year working relationship. The manager credited Brown for providing him the opportunity to lead the major league club and expressed gratitude for their professional bond.

Playoff Expectations and Historical Performance

Houston’s current campaign follows a 2025 season in which the team missed the postseason for the first time since 2016. That year, the Astros finished three games behind the Seattle Mariners in the AL West and lost a tiebreaker to the Detroit Tigers for the final wild-card position. Prior to that, the club suffered a wild-card series loss to Detroit in 2024. Crane emphasized that his standing expectation is for the team to qualify for the playoffs every single year, despite the inherent difficulty of winning consistently.

On May 20 of this year, the Astros sat 5½ games out of first place in the AL West. Crane characterized the previous season's failure to make the playoffs as a "hiccup" and suggested that a few adjustments and good decisions could return the franchise to its previous standard of success. The owner reiterated that the plan regarding Espada's status has remained unchanged since the start of the year, with the intention to address the managerial role formally once the season concludes.

As the team prepares for the final weeks of play, Espada emphasized his responsibility to lead the roster through a critical stretch of games. His primary instruction from ownership was to focus on winning daily matchups. The Astros continue to chase a postseason berth after their 2024 recovery saw them clinch the division title.
