Joey Porter Jr. confirmed he will play for the Steelers in 2026 after being inactive for the first two weeks due to a back injury and conditioning issues.

Pittsburgh Steelers cornerback Joey Porter Jr. confirmed Thursday that he will "definitely" play during the 2026 season, though he remains noncommittal regarding his availability for Sunday’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals. Porter was inactive for the first two games of the season following a failed contract extension negotiation and a back injury sustained during a mobility workout on the first day of training camp. While he was activated to the 53-man roster on August 30, he has yet to be a full participant in practice.

During Wednesday and Thursday’s sessions this week, Porter was a limited participant with his injury status designated as "Not Injury Related - Conditioning." The cornerback noted that both his back and his current conditioning level are roadblocks to his return. Coach Mike McCarthy stated Thursday that Porter is "on schedule" and performed quality work during Wednesday's practice. Porter expects to play on a limited snap count once he is cleared for his season debut.

In addition to physical setbacks, Porter refuted reports that he requested a trade or sought a second opinion on his back. He previously spent time on the physically unable to perform list and traveled with the team to New England in Week 2 but did not play. If he returns against the Bengals, Porter noted he is familiar with the matchup, having faced wide receivers Tee Higgins and Ja’Marr Chase five times each during his career.
