Mikhail Sergachev scored at 3:27 of overtime to lift the Utah Mammoth to a 4-3 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins on Thursday night. The win was secured after Logan Cooley tied the game with one second remaining in regulation, batting the puck in from the left side of the net to complete his third career hat trick. Cooley, a Pittsburgh native, scored twice in the first period to give Utah an early 2-0 lead before his last-second heroics marked his seventh goal of the season.
According to ESPN, the Penguins had taken a 3-2 lead with 25 seconds left in the third period on a goal by Ben Kindel. Rickard Rakell provided a short-handed goal and Erik Karlsson also scored for Pittsburgh. In the extra frame, Sergachev beat goaltender Arturs Silovs off a rebound to end the contest. Silovs finished the game with 30 saves, while Utah goaltender Sebastian Cossa stopped 31 shots to help the Mammoth improve to 8-0-0 when leading after two periods.
This matchup marked only the 10th time in NHL history that opposing teams exchanged a go-ahead or game-tying goal within the final 30 seconds of regulation. Cooley became the third Pittsburgh-born player to record a hat trick against the Penguins, joining Brandon Saad and R.J. Umberger. The Mammoth have now won three of their last five games and remain 5-0-0 in games immediately following a loss.
