Quarterback Marcus Mariota sustained a right knee MCL sprain during the first quarter of Washington's 20-7 preseason win against Miami.
Washington Commanders quarterback Marcus Mariota suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament (MCL) in his right knee during the first quarter of a 20-7 preseason-opening victory against the Miami Dolphins. The injury occurred as Mariota pivoted on his right leg while executing a handoff to rookie running back Kaytron Allen. After limping off the field and undergoing evaluation in the medical tent, the veteran signal-caller walked to the locker room and did not return to the contest.
Head coach Dan Quinn confirmed that Mariota will miss the remainder of the preseason, including Saturday's scheduled matchup at Detroit and the August 28 exhibition finale against Baltimore. Despite the setback, the team remains optimistic regarding his availability for the regular-season opener on September 13 at Philadelphia. Quinn stated that the organization does not intend to sign an additional quarterback to the roster at this time.
Mariota's Role and Statistical Impact
Mariota is entering his third season with Washington, serving as the primary backup to Jayden Daniels. During the previous season, he appeared in 11 games and earned eight starts, recording 1,695 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. His 2024 contributions included replacing an injured Daniels to lead two victories, highlighted by a game-winning pass at Dallas with only two seconds remaining on the clock in the regular-season finale.
This MCL sprain marks the third consecutive training camp hampered by physical setbacks for the quarterback. In 2024, Mariota began the year on injured reserve due to a strained pectoral muscle. During the prior year's preseason, a lower leg strain prevented him from participating in exhibition play entirely.
Commanders Roster Health and Practice Updates
Beyond the quarterback room, Washington is managing several other player recoveries as they prepare for Tuesday's practice session. Nick Allegretti, currently the favorite to secure the starting center position, is expected to return to the field alongside tight end John Bates. Both athletes have been sidelined since the opening day of training camp on July 29, dealing with a strained calf and a hamstring injury, respectively.
Starting cornerback Trey Amos is continuing rehabilitation for an ankle injury sustained during an August 7 practice. Amos had previously started camp on the physically unable to perform (PUP) list while recovering from a fractured fibula suffered in Week 10 of the last season, followed by a soft-tissue injury. In the backfield, running back Jeremy McNichols is projected to miss approximately two weeks of action due to a quad injury.
Preseason Schedule and Season Outlook
While Mariota was unlikely to see action in the final preseason game at Baltimore, his absence shifts the workload for the remaining exhibition schedule. The Commanders' medical staff will focus on his readiness for the trip to Philadelphia in mid-September. Coach Quinn reiterated the team's positive outlook, noting, "We're optimistic he'll be ready at that time," regarding the Week 1 target date. The team continues to monitor the progress of injured veterans and rookies alike as the roster cut-down deadlines approach following the Detroit and Baltimore matchups.
