Trevor Megill struck out Jonny DeLuca with runners on second and third to preserve a 3-2 victory for the Milwaukee Brewers in Game 1.
The Milwaukee Brewers defeated the Tampa Bay Rays 3-2 on Friday night to take a 1-0 lead in the World Series. Trevor Megill secured the save by striking out Jonny DeLuca in the ninth inning with runners occupying second and third base. This final out followed a replay review that overturned an apparent game-ending double play; officials determined Brewers shortstop Cooper Pratt had his foot off the bag while receiving a throw from Brice Turang on a ball hit by Liam Hicks.
Jacob Misiorowski earned the win after limiting the Rays to one run across five innings of work. Offensively, Christian Yelich initiated a two-run first inning with an RBI triple, providing a lead the Brewers never relinquished. Jackson Chourio and William Contreras each recorded two hits, while Contreras added two caught stealings behind the plate. This matchup represents the first World Series between two potential first-time champions since the 1980 meeting of the Phillies and Royals.
Milwaukee’s victory occurred before a sellout crowd during the city’s first World Series appearance since 1982. Historically, the winner of Game 1 has gone on to win the championship in 62.8% of World Series matchups. The Rays and Brewers are among five active MLB franchises, including the Rockies, Padres, and Mariners, who have not yet won a title.
