Coach Nick Nurse plans to utilize 24-year veteran LeBron James as a point forward and table setter for the Philadelphia 76ers offense.
Philadelphia 76ers head coach Nick Nurse introduced offensive schemes on Day 3 of training camp, identifying 24-year veteran LeBron James as the team's primary "offense creator" and "table setter." Team sources told ESPN that Philadelphia discussed playing James at point forward this offseason. James currently ranks No. 1 in all-time NBA points and No. 4 in all-time assists.
While James will handle significant playmaking duties, Nurse identified Tyrese Maxey, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe as additional players who will push the ball in transition. The coach intends for James to initiate possessions either by bringing the ball up the floor or receiving the first pass on the wing to trigger half-court actions.
To manage spacing in the half court, James, Brown, and Joel Embiid will share responsibilities operating out of the post. Brown noted he has been working with development coaches on passing out of double teams to find open teammates on the three-point line. Nurse described the coaching dynamic with James as a "collaborative situation" and sought input from five different players prior to Thursday's practice. The 76ers are scheduled to debut this offensive structure in their preseason opener against the New York Knicks on Monday.
