The Seattle Seahawks have ruled out quarterback Sam Darnold for Sunday's matchup against the Arizona Cardinals. According to ESPN, the decision follows a glute injury Darnold sustained during the fifth play of a season-opening win against the New England Patriots. While the team described the issue Monday as a "very unique soft-tissue" injury, there are currently no plans to place the quarterback on injured reserve.
Drew Lock is in line to make his first start since 2024 as Darnold's replacement. Lock previously stepped in during the opener to lead Seattle to a 13-10 victory over the Patriots. The injury occurred when Darnold's right knee hit the turf while being sacked from behind, causing him to limp into the locker room after an initial medical tent examination.
Medical staff initially announced the setback as a hip injury, and Darnold remained at Harborview Medical Center overnight for testing due to significant discomfort. The reigning Super Bowl champions face a schedule that includes a Week 3 visit to the Washington Commanders followed by home games against the Los Angeles Chargers and San Francisco 49ers.
