The Tampa Bay Rays completed a sweep of the New York Yankees with a 4-3 win in Game 3, marking the Yankees' 17th consecutive season without a championship.

The Tampa Bay Rays advanced to the American League Championship Series for the third time in franchise history after defeating the New York Yankees 4-3 to complete an ALDS sweep. In the final game of the series, Rays closer Bryan Baker struck out Trent Grisham on a changeup with Ben Rice on deck to secure the victory. The Yankees nearly tied the game in the sixth inning, but a two-run home run by Anthony Volpe was overturned to an RBI double due to spectator interference.

New York’s elimination was preceded by a Game 1 near no-hitter from Drew Rasmussen and a Game 2 performance featuring four Yankees errors. For the series finale, manager Aaron Boone altered the lineup by starting Volpe at second base and Jose Caballero at third base, moving Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Ryan McMahon to the bench. Chisholm later entered as a pinch-hitter in the seventh inning, going 0-for-8 across the series.

Aaron Judge remained inactive for the entire postseason after straining his right calf on Sept. 16, just seven games into his return from a fractured rib. The two-time defending AL MVP finished his 10th major league season having played in 66 games with 18 home runs and a .241 batting average. The loss marks the 17th straight season without a World Series title for the franchise, their second-longest drought ever.

Manager Aaron Boone has now reached the postseason eight times in nine years but holds a 1-8 series record against teams with equal or better regular-season records. While Boone expressed a desire to return for the final year of his contract, the Yankees face an offseason preceding a potential lockout on Dec. 1. The Rays, who operated with less than a third of the Yankees' payroll, now move on after winning the AL East crown.
