Tarik Skubal and Japanese Trio Lead Projected MLB Free Agent Class

Left-hander Tarik Skubal is expected to pursue a contract exceeding $325 million as the Nippon Professional Baseball posting window opens in November.

Tarik Skubal enters the upcoming free agency period as the premier starting pitcher, expected to surpass Yoshinobu Yamamoto’s record $325 million contract. The 29-year-old left-hander, who turns 30 in November, currently maintains a 2.93 ERA with a 7-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio and a fastball averaging 97 mph. Jeff Passan reports that Skubal could potentially double the $245 million record for pitchers aged 30 or older, provided no salary cap is implemented under a new collective bargaining agreement.

Three stars from Nippon Professional Baseball—Teruaki Sato, Kaima Taira, and Hiromi Itoh—are expected to be posted in early November. Sato, a 27-year-old left-handed third baseman for the Hanshin Tigers, is currently slashing .320/.398/.636 with 35 home runs and 92 RBIs. Taira, a 5-foot-8 right-hander for the Seibu Lions, leads the NPB with a 95.6 mph average fastball and holds a 1.45 ERA through 124 innings. Itoh has recorded over 150 innings for five consecutive seasons and averaged 92 mph on his four-seamer this year.

Position player depth remains limited beyond Sato. Brandon Lowe, who turned 32 in July, is the only 30-homer hitter in the class. Jake Bauers leads the National League in on-base percentage for Milwaukee, while Jazz Chisholm Jr. enters the market at age 29 with 19 home runs and 40 stolen bases. Luis Arraez, noted for the lowest strikeout rate in baseball, is also a featured bat in a class described by evaluators as mediocre.

Several players face early November opt-out deadlines. Bo Bichette must decide on the remaining two years and $84 million of his New York Mets contract. Right-hander Michael King is expected to opt out of the final two years and $58 million owed by the Padres. Conversely, Corbin Burnes ($140 million remaining), Jose Berrios ($48 million), and Luis Severino ($22 million) are expected to remain with their current clubs due to injury or contract value.
