
The Chicago White Sox took a 2-0 lead in the AL Division Series on Monday after Braden Montgomery hit a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning.
The Chicago White Sox defeated the Cleveland Guardians 4-3 on Monday to take a 2-0 lead in their American League Division Series. Braden Montgomery provided the go-ahead runs in a three-run sixth inning by lining a two-run double down the right-field line against Erik Sabrowski. Chase Meidroth followed with an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2. The victory moves Chicago within one win of their first ALCS appearance in 21 years and improves their postseason record to 4-0.
Reliever Sean Burke earned the win, throwing 5⅓ innings of one-hit ball. Burke entered with one out in the third and retired 13 consecutive batters between the fourth and eighth innings, finishing with six strikeouts on 83 pitches. Grant Taylor secured his second straight save despite allowing an RBI triple to Jo Adell in the eighth. Cleveland starter Gavin Williams struck out 11 batters in five-plus innings, including a franchise postseason record five straight hitters, but took a no-decision after allowing two runs.
The Guardians initially led 2-0 in the first inning after Nathaniel Lowe hit a run-scoring chopper that resulted in a throwing error by Sean Newcomb, allowing Jose Ramírez to score. Chicago responded in the fourth with an RBI single from Munetaka Murakami. The White Sox now head to Guaranteed Rate Field for Game 3 on Wednesday, seeking their first home-field series clincher since 1906. Cleveland outfielder Chase DeLauter finished the game with two hits in the loss.
