Alexander Zverev defeated Alexander Bublik 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (1) on Tuesday to advance at the Shanghai Masters.

Alexander Zverev defeated Alexander Bublik 7-6 (6), 4-6, 7-6 (1) on Tuesday to reach the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals. In his first match since securing the year-end No. 1 ranking, Zverev saved three set points during the opening set tiebreaker. This victory marks only the second time Zverev has beaten Bublik in five career head-to-head meetings.

Statistical leaders during the match included Bublik, who recorded 20 aces compared to Zverev's 15. However, Bublik committed eight double faults, while Zverev finished with a single double fault. Zverev noted following the match that his ankle was acting up, attributing the physical strain to a high volume of recent play during a season where he won both the French Open and U.S. Open.

The result follows Monday's news that Zverev will overtake Jannik Sinner for the top ranking spot next month, as the Italian ended his season due to right knee inflammation. Zverev was assured of the year-end No. 1 position after Carlos Alcaraz lost his match on Monday.

In the next round, Zverev will face Alex de Minaur, who advanced by beating Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4. De Minaur has won the last two matches against Zverev, both of which took place at the Laver Cup. In other Tuesday action, Arthur Gea defeated Jakub Mensik 7-6 (4), 6-4 to move forward in the tournament.
