The San Francisco 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Rams 27-7 in Melbourne, Australia, despite losing rookie receiver De'Zhaun Stribling to a left ankle injury in the second quarter. Quarterback Brock Purdy threw touchdown passes to Mike Evans, Deebo Samuel, and Demarcus Robinson to secure the win. Stribling, the No. 33 overall pick out of Ole Miss, initially tweaked his ankle early in the game but returned before pulling up on an inside breaking route midway through the second quarter. He went down without contact and required a cart to reach the locker room after being ruled out just before halftime.
Coach Kyle Shanahan reported that while Stribling's Achilles is intact, the magnitude of the ankle injury remains unknown. The team will conduct further testing once they complete a 16-hour flight back to the Bay Area. Stribling entered his debut as a projected starter following a strong training camp, but he failed to record a catch before the exit.
San Francisco also lost tight end Jake Tonges to a knee injury during the second quarter. Shanahan described the issue as potentially serious, noting that while it is not an ACL tear, it appears to be a complex MCL injury. The team expects to gather more information on both players' conditions following their return to California.
