New York Jets rookie wide receiver Omar Cooper Jr. was placed on injured reserve Saturday with a sprained ankle, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. The 30th overall pick out of Indiana is expected to miss at least four weeks, making him eligible to return for the October 18 matchup against the New England Patriots. Cooper sustained the injury during the Jets' 23-10 victory over the Tennessee Titans after playing only four snaps.
Before exiting the Week 1 contest, Cooper recorded a 30-yard reception on the opening possession that set up a New York touchdown. The rookie did not participate in practice throughout the week and was officially ruled out for Sunday's game on Friday. With Cooper and Tim Patrick both on injured reserve, the Jets enter their Week 2 game against the Green Bay Packers at MetLife Stadium with only four active wide receivers: Garrett Wilson, Adonai Mitchell, Isaiah Williams, and Arian Smith.
To address the depth shortage, the Jets signed veterans Sterling Shepard and Tyler Johnson to the practice squad this week, though neither is expected to be elevated for Sunday. The team may rely on its five tight ends, a unit that saw every member take the field simultaneously for one play against the Titans. In the season opener, Williams and Smith were each targeted once, with Smith recording a drop on his lone opportunity.
