Meleek Thomas recorded 16 points in 19 minutes during his NBA debut as the Cleveland Cavaliers rallied for a 127-125 overtime win.
The Cleveland Cavaliers defeated the Minnesota Timberwolves 127-125 in overtime on Monday night, fueled by 16 points from rookie Meleek Thomas in his NBA debut. Thomas, the 34th overall pick out of Arkansas, shot 6-of-10 from the field and 4-of-5 from 3-point range across 19 minutes of action. Donovan Mitchell led the Cavaliers with 25 points as the team erased a 15-point first-half deficit to secure the win.
Thomas entered the contest with 5:53 remaining in the first quarter, replacing Peyton Watson. After missing a 28-foot 3-pointer on his first career attempt, the 6-foot-3 guard converted a running layup with 3:39 left in the opening period. He led Cleveland in scoring at halftime with 10 points in 10 minutes. His performance ranks as the second-most points by a Cavaliers rookie in a debut coming off the bench, trailing only the 18 points scored by Brevin Knight in 1997.
Coach Kenny Atkinson utilized Thomas as a third ball handler to assist Mitchell and James Harden after the rookie did not play in the season's first two games. Thomas finished the night with two rebounds and one steal, though he did not play during the final 9:35 of the game. Mitchell noted that Thomas' defensive attention to detail was a surprise, while Atkinson cited the rookie's aggressive play as the necessary spark for the comeback.
