Mike Evans Suffers Rib Injury as 49ers Defeat Cardinals 36-30

Veteran wide receiver Mike Evans exited Sunday's 36-30 win over the Cardinals in the second quarter due to a rib injury.

The San Francisco 49ers improved to 3-0 with a 36-30 victory over the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday, despite losing veteran wide receiver Mike Evans to a rib injury in the first half. Evans exited the game in the second quarter after an incomplete third-down pass from Brock Purdy. Before leaving, Evans recorded three receptions for 34 yards and a touchdown, and he also provided a lateral to Deebo Samuel Sr. for an 80-yard score on the opening drive.

Medical personnel assisted Evans as he held the right side of his sternum before he was carted to the locker room. Coach Kyle Shanahan stated after the game that the team could not yet determine if the injury involved a broken rib or an oblique. The 49ers entered the contest already missing wideouts Ricky Pearsall, De'Zhaun Stribling, Demarcus Robinson, and Christian Kirk, leaving Samuel, Jacob Cowing, KhaDarel Hodge, and Jordan Watkins as the remaining healthy receivers.

Several other starters failed to finish the game due to various ailments. Left tackle Trent Williams departed in the third quarter with a stinger and was replaced by Vederian Lowe. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw exited with a quad injury, while his replacement, Garret Wallow, also sustained a stinger but was able to return. Cornerbacks Deommodore Lenoir and Renardo Green both underwent concussion evaluations during the contest but were cleared to reenter the game.
