New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart is expected to miss an extended period and potentially the remainder of the season following a left knee injury, according to reporting from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport and Mike Garafolo. The 23-year-old suffered the injury on the seventh snap of Monday’s 28-6 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. The play occurred when Rams linebacker Byron Young hit Dart on his right side, sending him into linebacker Josaiah Stewart, who undercut the quarterback's legs. Dart was officially ruled out in the third quarter after initially being listed as questionable.

While coach John Harbaugh stated after the game that the team likely avoided a "devastating outcome," subsequent tests revealed the injury is more severe than first thought. Harbaugh noted on Tuesday that evaluations are ongoing and the team is preparing for a range of possibilities, including the potential for season-ending surgery. Before the injury, Dart had completed 23 of 29 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns in a season-opening win against the Dallas Cowboys.

Jameis Winston, who recently signed a two-year, $13 million extension, will take over as the starter. Winston struggled in relief on Monday, completing 11 of 27 passes for 111 yards with one interception. The Giants roster also includes Jake Haener on the practice squad. New York moves forward into Week 3 to face the 0-2 Tennessee Titans at the Meadowlands, followed by a Week 4 matchup against the Arizona Cardinals.
