Wild Sign Head Coach John Hynes to Multiyear Contract Extension

The Minnesota Wild announced a multiyear extension for head coach John Hynes, whose new deal will take effect starting with the 2027-28 season.

The Minnesota Wild have signed head coach John Hynes to a multiyear contract extension, the team announced Tuesday. Hynes is currently entering the final year of his existing deal, which covers his third full season with the franchise. The new agreement is scheduled to kick in for the 2027-28 campaign.

Since Hynes replaced Dean Evason during the 2023-24 season, Minnesota has produced a 125-78-24 regular-season record. Under his leadership, the club has made two playoff appearances, going 7-10 in those games. Last season, the Wild reached the second round for the first time since 2014-15 before being eliminated in five games by the Colorado Avalanche. This marked the first time in Hynes’ 10-year NHL coaching career that one of his teams advanced past the first round.

General manager Bill Guerin has actively shaped the roster for a Stanley Cup window, highlighted by the acquisition of defenseman Quinn Hughes from Vancouver last December. Hughes becomes eligible for an extension before his free agency begins on July 1, 2027. Guerin cited Hynes’ attention to detail and messaging as primary reasons for the extension. The Wild are scheduled to begin the 2026-27 regular season on Oct. 1 against the Nashville Predators.
